Let’s go baboon 10th birthday: The Havenots, Adrian Crowley 8th April 2004

Tomorrow- 8th April 2014 marks the 10th anniversary since the first ever let’s go baboon.

Here is a somewhat rambled lead up to that gig, something that was very special, raised £250 for Cancer Research and kick started off/on approach to promoting shows in London and York since.

For many months around 2003/4 i’d drunkenly talked about putting on a gig – invariably it ended up becoming a comedy or cabaret show, usually featuring Roger De Coursey and his bear. This was inextricably linked to drinking “Bad Jelly” from an Irish pub in Holborn…great days but not particularly productive.

Whilst my vision for a grand charity event was a little unrealistic, beneath the drunken highlights, I’d be keen to do something to mix my irrational urge to organise things, with my love of music. Promoting a gig seemed the ideal thing though I’d not the slightest idea what it really entailed.

To push myself in to putting on a show – I finally booked a venue, Upstairs at the Garate for April 8th – before I’d actually booked any acts. I thought that would help for the acts if I gave them a specified date by which to attend…

That precipitated hours of emailing, checking MySpace (let’s go baboon) several near misses (Broken Family Band, Charlie Parr) and then finally a bit of breakthrough.

Mainly – I got nill response but through some form of fluke managed to line up 3 acts and a respected DJ for the show:

1. The Havenots – glorious duet from Leicester who I’d seen at Summer Sundae the year before… videos for The Havenots & Liam Dullaghan

Update: looks like The Havenots have reformed. Songwriting of Liam Dullaghan hugely underrated.

2. Adrian Crowley (website)

Soon to become a regular for Let’s go baboon, Adrian was added to the bill as recommended by misplaced music. A remarkable Irish songwriter who has since collaborated with James Yorkston, been highlighted as one to watch by Ryan Adams, and produced some starkly beautiful records.

3. Our Tuli

Part of the Wetherby/Leeds music scene that has inspired me since I amicably parted ways with my early teenage obsession with Level 42. Led by Mark Wright who has been part of Hood, and most recently leading Maggie8

Here’s a very old let’s go baboon report archive let’s go baboon

Baboon – excerpts from a fanzine

So, before Let’s go baboon was set up, i published a couple of fanzines – Baboon – in 1993 and 1994. Looking back its a suitably ridiculous zine selling for 50p. I’m quite satisfied that I did alright with the bands I interviewed; Pavement, Boyracer, Hood, Cable etc just the questions i asked and my grammar were terrible…

In fairness I think you pay for what you get with a 50p zine… though all the other fanzines I read at the time seem a much better read.

I started Baboon 3 but life got in the way. Looking in my old folder I feel a bit bad really – as there is a never before seen interview Warsaw Gate (? Notts based i think ?) plus a never sent set of questions for the mighty Canannes…

More to follow with some interviews including Hood, Boyracer, Pavement, Hula Hoop, Strawberry Story, Beatnik Filmstars and more…

Quick update – Danny & the Champs

A quick update on developments for Let’s go baboon night of 25th November then:

– support will be announced tomorrow but with the whole aim of let’s go baboon to try and draw together local acts who are a) innovative b) good live and c) nice folk then I confirm they will be from Yorkshire…

– flyers and posters are just being sorted for circulation over the next few weeks

Danny & the champs album ‘Stay True’ has been released on Loose Records. It has had a load of plays on 6music and Radio 2 and has some terrific and very justified reviews.

So, as is my way, this is developing a little slowly but hopefully will build for a grand night out on 25th…

I’m looking at longer term gigs, always keen to look at collaborating with acts, venues etc for shows…
